The app displays the brain in augmented reality and takes users on a tour from the outside of the skull down to the neuronal level, display- ing information about each section as it goes. In addition to the tour of the human brain, the app also allows users to take a journey through evolution by examining the brain and skulls of our early ancestors, from Australopithecus up through to modern day Homo sapiens. There is also a physiol- ogy component of the app, where users can see how electrical and chemical messages get transmitted between neurons. Additionally, the app includes a game where users can search around their environ- ment using augmented reality to collect parts of the brain and assign them to their correct location. Brainapse is a hugely fun app that is also a great way to learn more about the human brain. Mol Chemistry +++ Platform: iPhone/iPad Available for Android: Yes Cost: $2.99 Fun to use, helpful study tool – Only a few topics currently available Mol Chemistry, from Substrate Games, is designed to make learn- ing organic chemistry a little less painful and a little more fun. Users can choose from a few topics that they want to review, including chi- ral centers and stereoisomers. Each topic comes with a tutorial, which describes what the topic is and how to identify its presence in a chemical structure. The app provides 2D and 3D chemical structures in which users have to identify the atoms of interest, based on the topic they chose. For example, us- ers who have dišculty identifying chiral centers can test their ability by picking out chiral centers on a chemical structure and seeing if they are correct. Users can track their accuracy over time and advance through more dišcult levels. Although there are only a few topics available, Mol Chemistry is a good app that provides a helpful review of organic chemistry concepts in a fun format. Amberbio +++ Platform: iPhone/iPad Available for Android: No Cost: Free Many ways to visualize and analyze data – Can only import/export in certain formats Amberbio is a great app for scientists looking to bring their data with them while they are on the go. Users can import datasets, project notes, and project settings, making it easy to organize and keep track of experiments. Once datasets are imported, us- ers can visualize the data in a number of ways, such as in tables and graphs. Additionally, users can directly analyze their data on the app using a number of statistical tests, ranging from basic linear regressions and ANOVAs up through hierarchical clustering and principal component analysis. The app provides a manual to ensure smooth operation of all of the features and allows users to send feedback on how to improve the app. Datasets can be easily exported once users are žnished analyzing their data on the app. Amberbio is a useful app for examining datas- ets from the convenience of your phone. HeRS Hemorrhage Risk Calculator ++ Platform: iPhone/iPad Available for Android: No Cost: Free Easy to use, full reference provided right on the app – Limited audience The HeRS Hemorrhage Risk Calculator is a useful tool for medi- cal students and professionals attempting to estimate the risk of hemorrhage in a patient su'ering from ischemic stroke. The app estimates the probability of hemorrhagic transformation using the Hemorrhagic Risk Stratižcation score, calculated based o' of variables that the user inputs in the app. Users can calculate the volume of stroke based on its length and width. Using this information and the age of the patient, the app calculates the likelihood of a hemorrhage. In addition to the calculator, the app provides the full reference that originally described the HeRS score. Although the app has limited func- tionality for those outside of the medical želd, it is a useful tool for medical students and professionals working with high-risk patients who have recently su'ered from a stroke. Approved Drugs +++ Platform: iPhone/iPad Available for Android: No Cost: Free Easy to search for and €nd a chemical of interest – No external references provided for the chemicals Approved Drugs assembles into one place a large selection of the chemicals approved for use by the FDA. Users can browse through drugs and probes, or utilize the search feature to žnd a particular chemical. For each chemical, both the 2D and 3D structures are provided for a more in-depth look at its composition. Additional information is provided for each chemical, including its known targets in the body, its molecular weight, and its ChemSpider ID number. Users can also cluster chemicals to see which ones are most closely related to each other. Once users have chosen a chemical of interest, they can copy or share the structure. The Approved Drugs app is a useful tool for those involved in drug discovery and compiles commonly used drugs and their structures into one place. Science – Microcosm 3D ++ Platform: iPhone/iPad Available for Android: No Cost: $2.99 Interesting representation of microscopic objects, fun to browse through – Limited number of objects on the app Science–Microcosm 3D is a fun little app that puts the size of our universe into perspective (on the microscopic scale, that is). Users can browse through objects as they get progressively smaller, starting from Robert Hooke's microscope and going all the way down to the atom. There are a number of micro- scopic items to explore, includ- ing £eas, viruses, chromosomes, and molecules. The app pro- vides a short description of each object, a 3D representation of it, and its approximate size. Although the app's functionality is fairly limited and there are just over a dozen objects to explore, it is still fun to use and would be a great tool for students just starting to explore a bit of the microscopic world around us.
