First Genome Sequence Frederick Sanger, Ph.D., and his colleagues successfully sequenced the first full genome in 1977, jump- starting the field of DNA sequencing. The first ever completed DNA sequence was the 5,375-nucleotide-long sequence of the phi X174 bacteriophage, opening the door to decades of DNA sequencing that has advanced our understanding of biology immeasurably.
