Synthetic Cell Created "A defining moment in biology" happened this month back in 2010 when J. Craig Venter, Ph.D., and his colleagues constructed the first self-replicating, synthetic bacterial cell. After ten years of research and almost $40m, the researchers were able to synthesize the 1.08 million base pair chromosome of a modified Mycoplasma mycoides genome and transplant into a donor cell.
