Reverse Transcriptase Enzyme Discovered The discovery of reverse transcriptase, an enzyme that uses an RNA template to catalyze the synthesis of DNA, turned the central dogma of molecular biology on its side. This 1970 discovery by David Baltimore, Ph.D., Howard Temin, Ph.D., and their colleagues launched a new direction of cancer research and led to the discovery of HIV. Drs. Baltimore and Temin would go on to win shares of the 1975 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine for this remarkable advance.
