First Practical Use of Restriction Enzyme In 1971, a key paper by Kathleen Danna, Ph.D., and Daniel Nathans, M.D., introduced the ability of endonuclease R to produce specific fragments of simian virus 40 (SV40) DNA. This original illustration of the utility of restriction enzymes has made the cloning of genes routine. Restriction enzymes have become fundamental to research since that paper, serving as a mainstay of molecular biology research.
